SSRJ#1: Faulkner
Initial Personal Reaction: “ A Rose For
Emily” is a very suspenseful story. Faulkner does a great job in showing
great details describing Emily’s life, and making the reader wanting to read it
over to understand it. I know for a fact when I first started reading the story
it was very confusing, but when I read over it a couple times it all started to
make sense. The symbolism in the story helped build a vivid image in my head
while I was reading it and made me enjoy reading. This story kind of reminds me
of my next-door neighbor because he never talks to anyone, so no one really
knows anything about him. Everyone is always making comments or rumors about
him, but no one really knows. His house is also very creepy and he is always
doing weird things over there.
Literary Element/Thematic Analysis: The setting of this story was so creepy!
When I think of the town they are in, I think of a very gloomy quiet town. I
also think of people walking around in nothing but black. However I think the
setting of this story was the literary elements to a story that is about death
and sorrow. He uses a lot of description that gives me an image in my head
nothing but death. For example when Emily went to the store to buy poison, I
was already thinking she was ready to kill someone!
Questions/Comments:
If you were in Emily’s shoes. Do you think you would live the
rest of your life the way she did? Explain.
Emily seems to be very mentally disturbed so if i were that mentaly disturbed I would probably lived just like she did.
ReplyDeleteI think that the question you asked is great but I don't think that the question can be clearly answered. For sure Emily is mentally ill. You never get a clear understanding of what she actually has and every mental illness is different. But I honestly think that if my father had died and I was left in a big old house I think I would reach out to my community for help. But I'm not the type of person to stay locked up in a house.I can understand wanting to know the answer to your question, everyone is quick to judge in the story and as a reader I know I was quick to say "Yup, her cheese has slid off her cracker." But you never know for sure how you would act if you were in that situation. And that's why I think the question can't accurately be answered.
ReplyDeleteI agree with how you said you had to reread to understand a few parts. In rereading i seen how her fathers death had a bigger effect on her and how her servants life was much more cruel to consider he was around that dead body.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't live like her but I kind of see why she is living like that. I got the feeling that she thought she was better than most, she was a socialite. She didn't have to pay taxes and was lonely because no one was really good enough for her. After her father died she seemed to rather be lonely than hang out with the rest of the population. Until she met Homer who she fell in love with, which was a forbidden love. He was a laborer and she was of high class. So she killed him so she wouldn't have to lose him.
ReplyDeleteI dont know if i could do that. If i was in the righ type of mind the answer would be no, but as for her she was mentally ill so I dont think she even thought there was anything wrong. Poor girl.
ReplyDeleteI had to reread this story a few times, when the stories are short it is the smallest words that change the entire story, tone, mood, conflict etc. At first I thought she loved the hand too then had to start over and reread the beginning. It was deep and interesting though.
