SSRJ#1: Faulkner
Initial Personal Reaction: “ A Rose For
Emily” is a very suspenseful story. Faulkner does a great job in showing
great details describing Emily’s life, and making the reader wanting to read it
over to understand it. I know for a fact when I first started reading the story
it was very confusing, but when I read over it a couple times it all started to
make sense. The symbolism in the story helped build a vivid image in my head
while I was reading it and made me enjoy reading. This story kind of reminds me
of my next-door neighbor because he never talks to anyone, so no one really
knows anything about him. Everyone is always making comments or rumors about
him, but no one really knows. His house is also very creepy and he is always
doing weird things over there.
Literary Element/Thematic Analysis: The setting of this story was so creepy!
When I think of the town they are in, I think of a very gloomy quiet town. I
also think of people walking around in nothing but black. However I think the
setting of this story was the literary elements to a story that is about death
and sorrow. He uses a lot of description that gives me an image in my head
nothing but death. For example when Emily went to the store to buy poison, I
was already thinking she was ready to kill someone!
