SSRJ#2: Colette

Jason Sims, SSRJ#2: Colette

Initial Personal Reaction: When I first started reading “ The Hand,” I was kind of confused. I had to go back over the reading because I thought she was talking about how much she was so in love her husband the whole time. When it comes to find out she was actually in love with her husbands hand. When she started talking about how she married a complete stranger, I started second guessing my thoughts about the reading and thinking why would a woman marry some one she just met? Then when I found out she was in love with his hand I was like whoa!

Literary Element/Thematic Analysis:  “The Hand” in this relationship, in my opinion, symbolizes a dysfunctional marriage. The reason why is because the woman seem to be in love her husband’s hand and not with the husband. She basically married his hand. “ The Hand” can also relate to reality marriages, it may not be a hand that is the reason for someone to marry someone and then later decide they didn’t want to be married, but it could other things also. For example some people marry others for their money and that never works out right in the end also.  So I think Colette is trying to say you shouldn’t just marry someone just because you like one thing about him or her, that’s a waste of time!

Questions/Comments:

What do you think Colette’s message is for this story?

What do you think the hand in this story symbolizes?

SSRJ#1: Faulkner

Jason Sims

SSRJ#1: Faulkner

Initial Personal Reaction: “ A Rose For Emily” is a very suspenseful story. Faulkner does a great job in showing great details describing Emily’s life, and making the reader wanting to read it over to understand it. I know for a fact when I first started reading the story it was very confusing, but when I read over it a couple times it all started to make sense. The symbolism in the story helped build a vivid image in my head while I was reading it and made me enjoy reading. This story kind of reminds me of my next-door neighbor because he never talks to anyone, so no one really knows anything about him. Everyone is always making comments or rumors about him, but no one really knows. His house is also very creepy and he is always doing weird things over there.

Literary Element/Thematic Analysis:  The setting of this story was so creepy! When I think of the town they are in, I think of a very gloomy quiet town. I also think of people walking around in nothing but black. However I think the setting of this story was the literary elements to a story that is about death and sorrow. He uses a lot of description that gives me an image in my head nothing but death. For example when Emily went to the store to buy poison, I was already thinking she was ready to kill someone!

Questions/Comments:  If you were in Emily’s shoes. Do you think you would live the rest of your life the way she did? Explain.
